Geographical names refer to the giving of names to natural features such as mountains, rivers, and lakes, or to features and regions such as bridges, tunnels, and intersections. Since 2014, Korea has been using road name addresses that use road names, building numbers, and detailed addresses to make it easy to find directions in complex cities. This study conducted basic research on assigning geographical names to tidal creeks formed in tidal flats, such as road name addresses. The most important thing in naming a place is that tidal creeks, that is, the geographic entity, must be able to be differentiated from other features. To this end, the shape of tidal creeks was investigated based on data such as satellite images for 17 tidal flats in Incheon, Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, and Jeonnam. In addition, by using the Gaetgol distribution map produced using aerial lidar data published by the National Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency, place name elements (name form, all top places, back place places, etc.), place name types (basic place names, defense place names, numerical place names, etc.) and reviewed the legal and institutional procedures for the establishment of geographical names. It is hoped that this study will help publicize the need for the establishment of names for tidal creeks, and help to understand the topography of tidal flats and easily recognize the locations through the enactment of name names for tidal creeks in the future.
