Illegal fishing in the exclusive economic zone has long been a problem in Korea's maritime security environment, and transnational crimes such as drug smuggling have recently increased. In the process of cracking down on these illegal vessels, the targeted vessels often resist and use weapons against the coast guard officer who approach them. In response to this, various efforts have been made to discuss the legal basis for the use of weapons for law enforcement at sea, including the use of naval guns and crew served weapons. Meanwhile, in the United States, conscious of the adverse effects of using force, various alternative equipment has been researched and introduced as police equipment. Among them, 'acoustic weapons' that use sound waves to neutralize targets are also being considered as alternative equipment. In the case of acoustic weapons, there is a possibility of causing harm to the body of a person when used on a coast guard, but at the same time, it is thought that it can provide an opportunity to exercise policing forces in a safe manner for both the target and the coast guard. However, in the case of acoustic weapons, not only is the discussion in Korea minimal, but the legal system has not been established. Therefore, this article examined the domestic legal system regarding the use and management of police equipment by the coast guard, examined the concept, introduction, and use of acoustic weapons ‘LRAD’, and suggested directions for improving domestic laws for the utilization and introduction of LRAD.
